Wat Chai Mongkhon, Buddhist temple near Ping River in Chang Khlan, Thailand.
Wat Chai Mongkhon is a temple in Lanna style with multi-tiered roofs topped by ornamental ridge finials shaped like mythical creatures. The main building houses a Buddha image and contains decorated interior spaces from different periods.
The temple dates to the 16th century and fell into disrepair during a period of foreign occupation. A local ruler restored it after the invaders were driven out of the region.
The painted walls inside tell stories from Buddha's life and show scenes from the Jataka tales. Visitors see these images as they sit or walk through the temple spaces during their time here.
The temple sits near the Ping River and is reachable on foot from the town center. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the paths around the grounds can be uneven and sometimes slippery.
A separate shrine inside honors a Chinese deity where visitors come to make offerings. Monks also work with animals that people can purchase and release for spiritual merit.
