Wat Thang Sai, Buddhist temple in Thong Chai, Thailand
Wat Thang Sai is a Buddhist temple set on a hill in Thong Chai, Thailand, with a large stupa crowning its highest point. Closer to the beach at the base of the hill sit the administrative buildings and the quarters where resident monks live.
The Phra Mahathat Chedi Phakdi Prakat was built over roughly a decade spanning the 1990s and 2000s as a place to house sacred Buddha relics. Its construction turned a modest hilltop site into a recognized religious destination in the region.
The nine golden spires at the top draw local worshippers who come to offer prayers and small offerings on a regular basis. This part of the temple anchors the spiritual life of the surrounding villages.
The easiest approach is to park partway up the hill and walk the remaining path to reach the main stupa at the top. Visitors should bring clothing that covers the shoulders and knees, as modest dress is expected throughout the grounds.
The layout of the whole temple follows the Buddhist idea of Mount Meru, a cosmic mountain seen as the center of the universe. This shapes the way the buildings rise from the beach level up toward the spires at the summit.
