Turbat Al Bai

Turbat Al Bai is a mausoleum in the Medina of Tunis featuring decorated ceilings, carved wooden elements, and intricate tilework throughout. The building combines these decorative details in both interior and exterior spaces to create a unified architectural form.

This structure was built during the reign of Ali II ibn Hussein in the 18th century and is the largest funeral monument in Tunis. It houses the burial chambers of multiple rulers from the Husainid dynasty who governed Tunisia from power.

The burial spaces display traditional mosaic artistry and Islamic calligraphy that tell stories of the royal family members resting here. These artistic elements shape how the interior feels and what visitors notice when walking through.

The building sits on Rue Sidi Dkhil in the historic Medina of Tunis and is easy to reach while walking through the area. Those exploring the southwest section of the old city can include this site in their route.

Some members of the ruling family, including Moncef and Lamine, were buried in different locations rather than at this main site. These separate burials show how burial decisions were distributed across the dynasty's history.
