The fortress contains three main towers reaching 22 meters in height, thirteen watchtowers, and limestone walls positioned along the Bosphorus strait.

Sultan Mehmed II ordered the construction of Rumelihisarı between April and August 1452 to control maritime traffic before the conquest of Constantinople.

The fortress grounds include an open-air amphitheater that regularly hosts traditional performances and musical events throughout the summer season.

Located on the European side of Istanbul, the fortress museum welcomes visitors from Thursday through Tuesday between 9:00 and 17:00.
