Tunceli, Administrative center in Eastern Anatolia Region, Turkey.

Tunceli sits at an elevation of 940 meters in the Munzur Mountains of Eastern Turkey, with several rivers running through the region. The city spreads across this mountainous landscape with steep terrain and river valleys.

The region was originally known as Dersim before being renamed in 1935. It underwent major transformations between 1937 and 1938 during the consolidation of the Turkish Republic.

The people of Tunceli follow Alevi religious traditions that shape community gatherings and celebrations throughout the year. These practices remain central to how locals mark important moments together.

Visitors can reach the city by buses from major Turkish cities or by flying to Elazig Airport and driving from there. Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the mountainous surroundings.

The city elected a communist mayor in 2019, a distinctive choice in Turkish local governance. This political direction has shaped public initiatives and local projects.
