Hakkâri, Mountain city in southeastern Turkey

Hakkâri sits at 1720 meters elevation, surrounded by the Cilo Mountains reaching 4175 meters and the Sat Mountains reaching 3810 meters.

The Ottoman Empire annexed this region in 1515, yet local Kurdish leaders maintained control of the area until the mid-nineteenth century.

The population follows seasonal migration patterns, moving to higher pastures during summer months for livestock grazing in the mountain meadows.

The city connects to Van in the north and Siirt in the west through mountain roads, serving as a regional center for livestock trade.

Thirteen stone stelae discovered in 1998 feature human figures carved between the fifteenth and eleventh centuries BCE, measuring up to 3.10 meters tall.
