Hakkâri, Mountain city in southeastern Turkey

Hakkâri is a mountain town in southeastern Turkey located at an elevation of around 1720 meters (5,600 feet), surrounded by high peaks and dramatic terrain. The Cilo Mountains and Sat Mountains form the backdrop, creating a setting where valleys and slopes dominate the geography.

The region came under Ottoman control in the sixteenth century, yet local Kurdish leaders maintained considerable autonomy for several centuries afterward. This period of local authority left lasting marks on the region's character and communities.

The local community centers much of daily life around pastoralism and mountain living, shaping how people work and trade throughout the seasons. Family connections to herding and agriculture remain visible in the markets and daily rhythms you witness.

The town connects to Van and Siirt through mountain roads that cross challenging terrain. Visitors should prepare for steep slopes, variable weather, and the fact that the high elevation affects how the body feels when first arriving.

Thirteen stone stelae discovered near here feature carved human figures dating back between three and four thousand years. These ancient markers hint at civilizations that existed in these mountains long before the city was established.
