USS Gudgeon, Museum submarine in Izmit, Turkey
The Tang-class submarine USS Gudgeon stretches 82 meters long at the Kocaeli Museum Ships Command, displaying its original naval equipment and compartments.
Commissioned in 1952, this submarine made history as the first American vessel to complete a global circumnavigation between July 1957 and February 1958.
The vessel was renamed TCG Hızırreis when transferred to Turkey in 1983, honoring the Ottoman Admiral Kurtoğlu Hızır Reis who led naval campaigns.
Located at Salim Dervişoğlu Street 56 in Kozluk district, visitors can explore the submarine's control room, torpedo compartments, and living quarters.
In August 1957, Soviet naval forces compelled this submarine to surface near Vladivostok, marking the first such incident during the Cold War.
