Kocaeli Museum, Archaeological museum in İzmit, Turkey
The Kocaeli Museum is an archaeological and ethnographic museum in the Kozlu neighborhood of İzmit that holds objects from many periods of history. The collection ranges from the Paleolithic era to Ottoman times and is spread across several indoor halls and outdoor areas.
The building was originally designed as a railway station by German architect Otto Ritter and constructed between 1873 and 1910. It was converted into a museum in 2006, giving the structure a new function while keeping its original form.
The museum sits inside a former railway station, which gives the visit an unusual character that most history museums do not have. Visitors can walk around old steam locomotives displayed outside, which connect the building's past to its current use.
The museum is on Istasyon Street in the Kozlu neighborhood and is straightforward to reach on foot from the city center. The grounds are large enough to explore at a relaxed pace, and rest areas are available for breaks.
Some of the old railway cars on the grounds have been turned into a dining space for visitors. Eating there means sitting inside a piece of the region's railway history.
