USS Eversole, Museum ship destroyer in Kocaeli, Turkey.
USS Eversole is a Gearing-class destroyer open to visitors as a museum ship in Kocaeli Province, Turkey. The vessel has several decks that include weapon systems, crew quarters, a mess hall, and a command center, all accessible to the public.
The destroyer entered service as USS Eversole in 1946 and served the United States Navy for about 27 years. In 1973 it was handed over to Turkey and renamed TCG Gayret, the name it still carries today.
Walking through the ship gives a real sense of how sailors spent their days in tight spaces, from sleeping quarters to the mess hall. The crew areas feel lived-in and immediate, making everyday life on a warship easy to imagine.
Moving around the ship means climbing steep stairs and ducking through narrow hatches between decks. Flat, closed shoes work best, and it helps to take your time so you can move safely through the tighter sections.
The ship is named after a US Navy officer killed in action during World War II, a detail that most visitors walk past without noticing. A small commemorative plaque on board marks the connection between the vessel and the person it was named for.
