Arpaçay Dam, Gravity dam in Kars Province, Turkey
The Arpaçay Dam is a gravity dam on the Akhuryan River that forms a large water body used for irrigation and water supply. The structure rises prominently in a mountainous landscape and serves both Turkish and cross-border water management needs.
The dam was completed in 1983 as a result of cooperation between Turkey and the Soviet Union for managing water in the border region. This project emerged from agreements to share resources from the river that flows between the two countries.
The dam functions as a physical connection point between Turkish and Armenian territories, representing decades of cross-border water resource management.
The dam is located in a mountainous area and can be reached by road from nearby towns, with visiting best during warmer months. The site offers views of the water and mountains, though sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the terrain.
The reservoir has become an important habitat for migratory waterfowl that stop or overwinter in the region. This bird diversity makes the location interesting for nature observers interested in studying local species.
