Church of the Holy Apostles of Ani, Medieval church ruins in Ani, Turkey.
The Church of the Holy Apostles is a church ruin in Ani with a rectangular floor plan and four apse chambers along its sides. The structure displays elaborate stonework at its entrances and was part of the large medieval settlement complex on this plateau.
The building was constructed before 1031 and received donations from Prince Abughamir Pahlavuni, reflecting its importance in the community. During the 13th century it underwent changes and rebuilding during the Seljuk period.
The church displays features of Armenian building traditions with stone carvings at the entrance that show the skill of medieval craftspeople. Visitors today can see the carefully carved details on the walls and door openings, which reveal the artistic knowledge of its builders.
The site sits on a high plateau and is accessible via marked paths within the Ani archaeological grounds. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain with stones and elevation changes.
Excavations in 1909 uncovered colored stone inlays and inscriptions that preserved information about medieval administration. These discoveries provide insights into daily life and organizational structures of the people who used this place.
