Arteni, Mountain summit in Aragatsotn Province, Armenia

Arteni is a mountain summit in Aragatsotn Province that reaches 2,047 meters with steep, dark slopes. The slopes are covered in volcanic glass, a material formed from ancient lava flows in this region.

Arteni's slopes hold remains of Stone Age campsites. On Satani Dar hill, tools of obsidian — cutters, scrapers and blades — belong to pre-Shellean, Shellean and Acheulean periods, and Middle and New Stone Age tools were found too. The last eruption of this volcano is recorded in 1340.

The mountain's name appears as Arteni in Armenian and Bogutlu in Turkish, reflecting the region's layered toponymy. Its slopes are the only place in Armenia where the bellflower Campanula massalskyi grows; outside this area the plant is known only from a limited zone in Turkey, which makes the mountain a reference point for botanists.

The climb requires no specialized equipment, but hikers should prepare for challenging sections along the route. Sturdy footwear and physical endurance matter more than technical climbing gear.

Arteni is the only place in Armenia where the bellflower Campanula massalskyi grows; elsewhere the species is limited to a small area of Turkey. The plant was named after the botanist Massalsky, and it flowers on the mountain's slopes.
