Uçhisar, Ancient stone town in Cappadocia, Turkey.

Uçhisar is a town centered on a 60-meter-high natural rock formation filled with passages, chambers, and underground tunnels carved from volcanic stone. The surrounding houses are partially built into the rock or nestled against it, creating an unusual urban landscape.

The settlement originated in Hittite times and later served the Byzantines as a defensive strongpoint, with the rock formation functioning as a watchtower. Over centuries, this dual role as shelter and observation post shaped how the place developed.

Rock-cut churches throughout the town reveal how faith shaped daily life here, with altars and frescoes still visible inside the stone chambers. These spaces show the deep connection between religious practice and the community that carved and used them.

The town sits about 7 kilometers from Nevşehir and 12 kilometers from Ürgüp, offering easy access to Göreme National Park and regional hiking trails. Bring sturdy footwear since the rock paths are uneven and some sections involve steep climbs.

A tunnel about 100 meters long runs beneath the town's homes, connecting the fortress to external areas. This underground passage served both as an escape route and a way to protect water sources during times of conflict.
