Amasra Castle, Byzantine fortress in Bartın Province, Turkey.
Amasra Castle sits on a narrow peninsula connected to the mainland, consisting of two main sections: Zindan Castle on the peninsula and Sormagir Castle on Boztepe Island. Both parts are linked by the Kemere Bridge and feature defensive walls, gates, and towers built across different time periods.
The Romans built the original fortification at this location, which the Byzantines later reinforced substantially. In the 14th century, the Genoese added front walls and new gates, shaping the structure as it appears today.
The walls display stone carvings and coats of arms showing how different peoples left their mark on this strategic Black Sea location. You can see how Romans, Byzantines, and Genoese each contributed to the appearance of the structure.
Visitors can explore both sections of the structure and observe the different building periods and construction methods throughout. The connection between the two parts is easily walkable, allowing you to see the entire complex in one visit.
Hidden inside the fortress is a tunnel system leading to an underground freshwater pool. This reservoir served as a critical water supply during times of siege.
