Valla Canyon

Valla Canyon is a deep gorge carved through limestone formations in the Pınarbaşı region, with sheer rock walls that create a dramatic landscape. The Devrekani River flows through the valley, shaping the terrain over thousands of years.

The canyon gained international attention in 1994 when four students from Istanbul emerged after being lost for 14 days in the region. This dramatic event brought public focus to this remote corner of Kastamonu province.

Local communities have lived in harmony with this landscape for generations, incorporating the river and surrounding cliffs into their daily routines. The canyon represents an important connection to the natural world for people in the region.

Access to the canyon is gained via a forest path from Muratbaşı village that takes under two kilometers to reach the main area. Proper footwear and advance planning with local guides are important for a safe visit.

Two viewing platforms called Muratbaşı Burgu and Kerte offer glimpses of the valley where eagles and falcons make their nests on the steep cliffs. These birds of prey circle above the river and can often be spotted from the observation points.
