Cistern of the Hebdomon

The Cistern of Hebdomon measures 127 meters in length and 76 meters in width, featuring thick walls constructed with alternating layers of bricks and stones.

Built between the fifth and eighth centuries, this water reservoir supplied two imperial palaces, Magnaura and Jucundianae, which were located near the Marmara seashore.

The structure gained its Turkish name Fildamı after the Ottoman period, when the former water reservoir became a shelter for the Sultan's elephants.

The cistern contains two water outlets along the south wall staircases, with the eastern outlet positioned 1.5 meters above ground level and the western at 4.35 meters.

The western wall incorporates 19 internal niches for hillside support, while the eastern wall features 21 external niches to manage water pressure.
