Sinan Erdem Dome, Indoor sports arena in Bakırköy, Turkey
The Sinan Erdem Dome is a sports hall in the Istanbul district of Bakırköy with an oval steel roof structure resting on six paired concrete columns. The entire roof surface is clad with trapezoidal metal sheets and spans a multipurpose interior space for sporting events and concerts.
The hall opened in spring 2010 and took its name from a longtime president of the Turkish Olympic Committee. Following the closure of an older venue, the building assumed an important role for Istanbul basketball clubs.
The arena honors a Turkish sports official and now hosts competitions across several disciplines as well as major concerts. Local basketball clubs use the hall for important games, giving it a central role in Turkish sporting life.
The facility offers seating for varying spectator numbers depending on event type and is easily accessible in the European part of Istanbul. Visitors should check in advance about access to different seating sections, as the interior layout varies.
The roof gets its shape from the special arrangement of six double columns carrying a shuttle-shaped steel structure. This construction makes the hall immediately recognizable from the outside and distinguishes it from other sports buildings in the city.
