Monastery of Saint Barlaam

The Monastery of Saint Barlaam stands on a site that combines architectural elements from both Georgian Orthodox and early Christian building traditions.

Originally constructed as a Doric temple during the Seleucid period, the structure was transformed into a Christian monastery in the fourth century.

Following the destruction of a Zeus statue, Saint Barlaam established the first Christian monastic community at this location in the fourth century.
