Wuqi District, Coastal administrative district in Taichung City, Taiwan
Wuqi District is a coastal area in Taichung that includes the Port of Taichung, a major center for maritime trade with a specialized LNG terminal for energy distribution. The district is organized into fourteen administrative villages that form its local communities.
The area began as an urban township in Taichung County before becoming an official district of Taichung City during an administrative reform in 2010. This change consolidated local governance and integrated smaller communities into a larger city structure.
The Wuqi Cultural Center preserves a police station complex from 1931, with its main building and residential quarters offering a window into daily life during the Japanese period. Walking through these spaces reveals how the station was organized and how people worked and lived there.
When visiting, prepare for the coastal environment with wind and salty air, especially if exploring the port area. The fourteen villages are spread across small roads and are best reached on foot or by bicycle.
The area served as an important administrative center during the Japanese colonial period, and architecture from that time still shapes its cultural character today. The well-preserved police station from 1931 is one of the few remaining buildings that shows what daily operations looked like in that era.
