Tainan County, Former administrative division in southern Taiwan.
This was a former county in southwestern Taiwan with Xinying as its administrative center and economic hub. It comprised two county-administered cities and numerous townships scattered across the southern coastal plain.
The territory was established in 1946 after World War II and operated until 2010 when it merged with Tainan City to form Tainan Municipality. This consolidation ended a separate administrative structure that lasted nearly 64 years.
The region was known for sugar cane and grain cultivation in rural areas, while urban zones developed factories and trading centers. This mix of farming and industry shaped residents' daily life across generations.
The former territory can now only be explored through historical maps and documents since it no longer exists as a separate administrative unit. Visitors to the region can still explore the various urban and rural areas that once comprised this territory.
In 1950, the northern portion was separated to establish Chiayi and Yunlin as distinct districts, which significantly redrew the administrative map. This division reshaped South Taiwan's political boundaries and created administrative structures that remain to this day.
