Liouciou Township

Liouciou Township is an administrative division in Pingtung County, comprising eight villages spread across approximately 6.8 square kilometers. The township sits roughly 13 kilometers southwest of Taiwan's main island.

Dutch colonizers first reached the region in 1622 but encountered fierce resistance from the indigenous Siraya people. The tension escalated into a devastating conflict in 1636 that remains a defining moment in local history.

The township has numerous temples scattered throughout, where residents gather throughout the year to honor local deities and their ancestors. These sacred places shape the rhythm of community life and reflect deeply rooted spiritual traditions.

Regular ferry connections link the township to mainland Taiwan through Donggang Harbor and Yanpu Harbor, making it accessible for visitors. These services are the main way to travel between the township and the rest of the island.

The waters surrounding the township host a diverse marine ecosystem, home to around 176 fish species and green sea turtles. Chung Au Beach offers a rare glimpse into this underwater world where visitors can observe these creatures in their natural habitat.
