小琉球三隆宮, Chinese temple in Liuqiu, Taiwan
Sanlong Temple is a Chinese temple on the island featuring traditional architecture with intricately carved stone details and ornate decorations throughout its spaces. The layout includes multiple courtyards and halls arranged according to classical design principles, creating distinct zones for worship and gathering.
The temple was founded during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty when Chen Mingshan brought sacred offerings by boat and established an initial shrine. This modest beginning grew over generations into the larger temple that now serves as the spiritual center of island life.
The temple serves as the center for worshiping three mythological kings who hold special meaning for island residents and guide their spiritual practices. Visitors can observe local people making offerings and participating in rituals that shape the community's religious calendar.
The temple is located on Zhongshan Road and welcomes visitors throughout the day, though early morning and evening hours tend to be quieter. Wearing comfortable shoes is helpful, and visitors should be mindful of uneven surfaces in some older areas of the complex.
The largest celebrations happen every three years in autumn, when decorated portable shrines travel on fishing vessels around the entire island. This maritime procession is a rare ceremony where boats circle the coastline and residents prepare food offerings along the route.
