Donggang Zhen Hai Temple, Maritime temple in Donggang, Taiwan.
Donggang Zhen Hai Temple is a Chinese temple in the harbor town of Donggang, in southern Taiwan. It consists of several stone and wood halls arranged around a central courtyard, each dedicated to a different sea deity or protective figure.
The temple was founded in 1894 and served from the start as a spiritual anchor for the local fishing community. It was expanded and renovated over the following decades without losing its original layout.
Fishermen from Donggang stop here before heading out to sea and return to give thanks after a safe voyage. The offerings left at the altars, from incense to paper goods, reflect the daily prayers of families who depend on the ocean for their livelihood.
The temple is easy to reach on foot from central Donggang and can be paired with a visit to the nearby fish market. The most active moments happen during traditional festival periods, when ceremonies spill out into the surrounding streets.
The temple is home to one of Taiwan's most notable boat-burning rituals, in which a specially built wooden vessel is set alight as an offering roughly every twelve years. This event, part of the Wang Ye festival cycle, can last several days and draws visitors from across the country.
