Black Dwarf Cave, Coral reef cave in Liuqiu, Taiwan.
Black Dwarf Cave is a coral reef formation in Liouciou Township on the island of Liuqiu off the southern coast of Taiwan. The passages wind through porous limestone walls that rise from the ancient seabed toward open platforms overlooking the Taiwan Strait.
The name dates to the 17th century when Dutch forces chased local residents who sought shelter inside the rock chambers during a military campaign. That pursuit became part of the oral tradition passed down through generations on the island.
The entrance features traditional stone tablets and an altar where locals place incense offerings according to regional customs.
Visitors should bring flashlights because the passageways narrow in places and remain dark without natural light. The site stays open year-round, and the entrance fee hovers around 120 TWD.
Chinese banyan trees grow directly from the coral rock around the entrance, sending aerial roots into the porous limestone. These trees take hold in the old seabed material that now stands above ground.
