Erjie Rice Barn

Erjie Rice Barn is a three-story grain processing facility in Wujie that houses wooden rice husking equipment from the early 1900s. The building combines Japanese industrial construction techniques with local design elements and features a brick storage section added later to expand capacity.

This grain facility was built in 1928 during the Japanese colonial period as part of Taiwan's agricultural modernization efforts. An expansion with a brick storage warehouse came in 1935 to handle increased grain commerce in the region.

The facility preserves agricultural tools and machinery that demonstrate the evolution of rice processing methods in Taiwanese farming communities.

The facility sits directly beside the railway tracks and is clearly visible from the surrounding rice fields. It is most easily reached on foot from Erjie Station, where you can explore the surrounding area at your own pace.

The building features special windows that move vertically without requiring traditional latches, using an innovative counterweight system. This clever engineering detail is often overlooked but demonstrates the practical problem-solving of its era.
