Beitun Wenchang Temple, Literature temple in Beitun District, Taiwan.
Beitun Wenchang Temple is a literature shrine in Beitun where Confucianism and scholarship are honored. The complex features a main hall with four supporting columns, two side wings containing classrooms, and five shrine rooms dedicated to different deities.
The temple was founded in 1864 when community leaders raised funds to create a place promoting Confucianism and literacy. During the Japanese colonial period, part of the site was converted into a public school in 1904.
The temple serves as a place where students come to seek blessings for academic success from Wenchang Wang, the deity of literature. Visitors can observe how young people light incense and make offerings here to support their studies.
The temple is located on Changping Road in northern Taichung City and is easily accessible by public transport or car. The grounds are walkable and offer shaded areas to rest while exploring the site.
The temple underwent major renovation work between 1996 and 1998, giving it a refreshed appearance while keeping traditional elements intact. This restoration allows the space to feel both contemporary and historically rooted at the same time.
