Qingtian Hall, Military performance hall in Jinhu Township, Taiwan
Qingtian Hall is a granite cave hall carved into the rock in Jinhu Township with an elongated rectangular shape and substantial interior space. The interior accommodates hundreds of visitors on fixed seating, making it a functional gathering space.
The hall was built between 1962 and 1963 by the Republic of China military as a defensive installation on Kinmen Island. This underground structure was part of broader military fortifications in the region.
The name was inscribed on the rock wall by President Chiang Kai-shek and embodies a Chinese philosophy about human determination overcoming natural obstacles. Visitors can see these carved characters on the stone surfaces and sense the deeper meaning the place holds.
The hall requires advance registration with local authorities and is open only on specific days. Visitors should check ahead to find out when visits are permitted.
The granite walls are three times harder than marble and produce distinctive acoustic effects as you move through the space. White patterned tiles inside further enhance these natural sound qualities.
