Wushe Dam, Gravity dam in Ren'ai Township, Nantou County, Taiwan
Wushe Dam is a concrete gravity structure that spans Wushe Creek, which flows into the Zhuoshui River, holding back water for storage and power generation. The reservoir stretches across a mountain valley, held back by a solid concrete wall that rises from the riverbed.
Construction began during Japanese rule in 1939, was redesigned with American assistance after World War II, and finished in 1960. The post-war rebuilding period required new power sources, and this project became part of Taiwan's effort to expand electricity generation.
The structure reflects how different generations of engineers shaped water management in this valley through their respective knowledge and skills. It shows the influence of multiple design periods that were layered onto the original concept.
The area around the structure is mountainous and requires careful navigation, particularly during changeable weather. Visitors should bring appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear since the ground can be wet and slippery.
The reservoir lost significant storage capacity after Typhoon Morakot in 2009 due to sediment buildup on the bottom. Today the lake holds far less water than originally designed, demonstrating how extreme weather events can permanently reshape infrastructure performance.
