Wujie Dam, Gravity dam in Nantou County, Taiwan
Wujie Dam is a gravity dam northeast of Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County that crosses the Zhuoshui River with its solid concrete structure. Six floodgates control the water flow and move sediment downstream, while tunnels carry water to Sun Moon Lake for electricity generation and farm irrigation.
Construction began in 1919 during Japanese rule as part of the Sun Moon Lake hydroelectric project and finished in 1934 after facing several delays. The project was essential to developing power supply and irrigation systems across the region.
The area around the dam is home to indigenous communities, particularly the Wujie settlement, where people maintain traditional ways of life and local customs. The presence of the structure reflects how the landscape has been shaped by both natural features and human settlement in this region.
The best way to see the dam is to walk to the viewing point at the top where you can see the entire structure and water surface clearly. Access is possible year-round, but wearing comfortable shoes and being careful on the platform is a good idea.
In 2006, the Taiwan Power Company built a new water tunnel to replace the aging original structure while keeping water flowing to Sun Moon Lake without interruption. This modernization allowed the facility to continue operating reliably without stopping the water supply.
