Fire and Water Spring, Natural hot spring in Guanziling Scenic Area, Taiwan
Fire and Water Spring is a natural geothermal area where methane gas rises through rock crevices and ignites at the surface, while hot water flows simultaneously. The location sits within the Guanziling scenic zone and features multiple paths that give visitors access to the various active gas flames and water pools.
The phenomenon was first documented in 1701 by a Buddhist monk whose records described the natural gas flames. Over time, the area developed into a popular destination for visitors drawn to this rare spectacle of burning gases.
The name reflects the two natural phenomena visible here: flames and hot water emerging together from the ground. The sight of burning gases rising directly above steaming water has captivated the imagination of local people for generations.
Access is via County Highway 172, which runs between Chiayi and Tainan and connects to Provincial Highway 3. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the paths are uneven and the area can feel hot and steamy.
Water here reaches temperatures around 75 degrees Celsius and contains mineral-rich mud deposits believed to be soothing for skin and helpful for rheumatism. The high mineral content draws many visitors who seek out the therapeutic properties of the mud.
