Guguan, Natural hot spring in Heping District, Taichung, Taiwan
Guguan is a natural hot spring in Heping District, Taichung, where mineral-rich thermal water emerges between two plateaus along the Dajia River at elevations between 700 and 1000 meters. The site features bathing facilities and lodging options for both day visitors and overnight guests.
Local indigenous people discovered the springs before Japanese authorities built the first public bath facility in 1927 during colonial rule. The site later expanded to serve tourists and gradually developed into a popular thermal resort.
The springs split into an upper section managed by the Power Company and a lower area that became a thermal resort for visitors. This division shapes how people experience and use each zone today.
Morning visits or weekday arrivals tend to be less crowded than weekends and afternoons. Comfortable walking shoes are advisable since pathways between bathing areas can be uneven and sloped.
Archaeological finds from 1937 and 1950 uncovered ancient stone artifacts proving the site was inhabited and valued long ago. These discoveries reveal that healing waters attracted people for centuries before modern development.
