Guogang Shellfish Fossil Layer, Geological fossil site in Houlong, Taiwan
Guogang Shellfish Fossil Layer is a geological fossil site in Houlong with an exposed cliff face containing numerous shellfish fossils embedded in shale layers. These layers reveal the diverse marine life from the Pleistocene period that lived in this ancient sea environment.
Japanese railway workers discovered this fossil bed in 1921 while building a coastal railway line through Miaoli County. The find later helped scientists understand the ancient marine history of the region.
The name Guogang comes from ancient times when boats crossed the river mouth at high tide, showing how important this place was for local transportation and trade.
The fossil layer is located along Miaoli County Route 33 about one kilometer from the old railway tunnel and has educational signs on site. It is best visited on foot, and comfortable walking shoes are helpful for exploring the exposed cliff area.
Scientists have identified 135 different species at this location, with most belonging to the Pecten genus, a type of scallop shell. This variety shows how rich the ancient sea environment was in life.
