ChingHai Temple

ChingHai Temple, Taoist temple in Miaoli County, Taiwan

ChingHai is a Taoist temple in Miaoli County with traditional architecture featuring multiple prayer halls, a central courtyard, and ornamental stone carvings throughout the complex. The spatial arrangement combines function with decorative elements, creating a cohesive composition.

The temple was completed in 1885 and served during the Qing Dynasty both as a religious sanctuary and as an administrative office for county magistrates. This dual function made it an important hub for governance and spiritual practice in the region.

The temple maintains a strong connection with education, as its middle entrance remains reserved for individuals who achieve high academic distinctions. This tradition reflects the place's importance as a center for intellectual and academic excellence.

The site underwent extensive restoration work between 1997 and 2002 and received designation as a protected county monument. Visitors should allow time to explore the restored details and spatial layout of the temple.

In 1927, the temple grounds became a hub for Lishe, a group of intellectuals who hosted regular poetry readings and literary discussions. This shows how the place attracted scholars and thinkers across generations.
