Taoyuan Air Base, Military airbase in Taoyuan City, Taiwan
Taoyuan Air Base is an air force facility located southeast of Taipei's civilian Taoyuan International Airport that was converted into a naval facility in 2007. The site preserves a collection of 18 aircraft from the former Chung Cheng Aviation Museum, which were transferred here following the conversion.
The base played a role during the 1958 Quemoy Crisis, when F-104A Starfighter aircraft operated from the location. These jets represented some of the most advanced defense capabilities available at that time.
The former military installation now hosts the Taoyuan Land Art Festival, where visitors can see contemporary sculptures created by artists from around the world. This transformation shows how a military space has become a venue for creative expression.
The location is most easily accessed in the southeastern area near Taoyuan city. Visitors should be aware that the aircraft collection and art exhibitions are the main attractions when exploring the grounds.
A Chinese pilot defected in 1965 and landed an IL-28 bomber at the base, a rare moment during the Cold War. This event was one of the most notable instances of aircraft defection in the region.
