Walami, Hualien, Mountain hiking trail in Zhuoxi, Hualien County, Taiwan.
The Walami Trail is a hiking path through dense forests that spans about 14 kilometers and crosses multiple suspension bridges as well as narrow paths along cliff faces. The route runs at an elevation of about 1060 meters and provides access to various natural and cultural sights along the way.
The path originated in 1875 as part of a larger trail system that connected Yuli in Taitung County with Chushan in Nantou County. This historical network was important for linking different mountain regions and communities.
The path shows the presence of the Bunun, an indigenous people of this region, through remnants of slate houses and former settlement locations visible among the trees. These places tell of the long connection between people and this mountainous area.
Longer hikes require special permits, so it is best to check ahead which trail sections are accessible without permission. The best way to arrive is from Yuli Township, where you can combine train connections with buses.
The path cuts directly into cliff faces and crosses six suspension bridges that span deep gorges. At several points you can see waterfalls flowing through the rock formations, adding a dramatic element to the route.
