Duwei Old Bridge, Historic suspension bridge in Taitung County, Taiwan
The Duwei Old Bridge spans 127 meters across the Mawuku River and connects two townships through its concrete structure. It measures 4.65 meters wide and features an arch-shaped pier at its northern end.
Construction began in 1926 during Japanese colonial rule, and the structure was rebuilt in 1953 after typhoon damage. The bridge maintained its original height despite these repairs.
The bridge is a remnant of Japanese occupation and shows how infrastructure was built during that era. Visitors can experience this construction style from another time while walking across it.
The bridge is open only to pedestrians today and offers good views of the river below during daylight. The walkway is straight and easy to traverse, but visiting in clear weather is advisable.
The two piers rest on very different soil types: the northern pier stands on hard limestone, while the southern sits in soft sedimentary rock. This combination of stable and flexible foundations allowed the bridge to withstand the river and ground conditions.
