Old Dormitory of Tainan Prefecture in Takezonochō, Tainan

The Old Dormitory of Tainan Prefecture is a historic building with two distinct sections: a western-influenced northern building and a traditional Japanese-style southern structure. The property combines different architectural styles within a single compound.

The building was constructed between 1898 and 1906 and served as the residence of Tainan's mayor during the Japanese Colonial Period. The structure reflects the era when Japanese administration built such official residences for their administrators.

The northern section displays architecture from the Meiji period that blends European and Eastern design elements. Visitors can observe this mixture in the window styles, porches, and interior spaces that reflect both traditions.

The site is open to visitors from Friday through Sunday between 09:00 and 17:00, but remains closed Monday through Thursday. It is advisable to plan a visit during the weekend and allow time to explore both building sections.

Following extensive renovations completed in 2017, the northern building now functions as an official reception venue for international guests of Tainan's mayor. This means the building serves not only as a historical site but continues to play an active role in the city's diplomatic functions.
