Former Gate of National Cheng Kung University, University gate in Daxue Village, Tainan, Taiwan.
The former gate of National Cheng Kung University is an entrance structure with two black xumi pedestals supporting a white archway, adorned with an abstract cloud motif on the lintel. The geometry of the opening follows mathematical proportions.
The gate was built in 1956 and marked the renaming of Taiwan's Provincial College of Engineering to Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University. This change reflected the institution's growing role as a center for research and advanced education.
The gate blends Eastern and Western design elements and is seen by students as the threshold to the university community. It shapes the visual identity of the campus and marks where the city transitions into academic space.
The gate stands at the intersection of University Road and is easily accessible on foot from the city center or nearby railway station. The best view of the structure is obtained by approaching from the street side.
Professor He Chen-tse from the Architecture Department designed the gate with carefully calculated proportions, with height to width at 1:1.25. This deliberate geometric calculation shows how much attention was given to structural harmony.
