成功大學舊總圖書館, Historic library building in East District, Taiwan
The Old Main Library of National Cheng Kung University (成功大學舊總圖書館) is a historic building in the East District of Tainan, Taiwan, built on a T-shaped floor plan. It has multiple floors above and below ground, with reading rooms and book storage areas spread across the levels.
The building went up in 1957, at a time when the university was growing rapidly and needed new facilities to support its expanding student body. For decades it served as the main library on campus before a newer facility took over that role.
The old library sits at the heart of the National Cheng Kung University campus in Tainan and is one of the most recognized landmarks on the grounds. Students and visitors spot it easily thanks to its dark brick facade and rows of bright windows.
The main entrance is at ground level and easy to find from the surrounding campus paths. Because the building has several levels, it helps to check the signs in the lobby before heading to a specific floor.
The roof is fitted with tilted skylights and exterior louvers that manage daylight without relying on heavy mechanical systems, which was an unusual choice for a building of its era in Taiwan. This design detail means that reading areas on the upper floors receive natural light throughout the day without direct glare.
