Xuejia public school building, Historic school building in Syuejia District, Taiwan.
The Xuejia Public School Building is a historic school building in Syuejia District, in southern Taiwan. The structure is made of wood and features long open corridors and rows of classrooms arranged along a central layout typical of early 20th-century schools.
The building was constructed in 1918, during the period of Japanese rule in Taiwan, as part of a push to establish public schools across the island. After Japanese rule ended in 1945, the school continued to function and was later recognized as a historic structure worth preserving.
The school serves as a focal point in the district, and locals pass by it daily as part of their routine, recognizing it as a symbol of the community's educational tradition.
The building sits in the center of Syuejia District and is most easily reached by bus from Tainan. Before visiting, it is worth checking whether the interior is open, as access may be limited on certain days.
The original wooden pillars and curved tile roof follow a standard design that Japanese colonial authorities applied to public schools across Taiwan. This makes the building one of the few remaining examples of that school type still standing in the southern part of the island.
