Berdiansk, Port city in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine
Berdiansk is a port city on the northern shore of the Sea of Azov in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, sitting on a shallow bay with sandy beaches. The waterfront promenade runs for several kilometers, connecting residential neighborhoods with industrial facilities along the quay.
Count Mikhail Vorontsov founded a harbor here in 1827 to export wheat from the Russian Black Sea region to Europe. During the 20th century the settlement grew into an industrial center with machine building plants and a fishing fleet.
The name comes from the Berda River, a small stream that empties into the bay and once provided fresh water for early settlers. Today you can still see red brick warehouses near the old harbor where grain from the steppe plains was stored.
Most visitors arrive by bus or car via road connections from Zaporizhzhia. Walks along the waterfront promenade are possible year-round, though the beach area becomes more crowded in summer.
The Berdiansk Spit is a natural sand peninsula that stretches 16 kilometers into the sea and forms a sheltered lagoon. Because the water is shallow, the bay warms up quickly in summer and attracts swimmers from across the region.
