Galitska Synagogue, Orthodox synagogue in Zhylianska Street, Kyiv, Ukraine
The Galitska Synagogue is a house of worship featuring Moorish Revival design combined with Romanesque and Byzantine elements across its facade. The building displays rounded arches and ornate decorative patterns that define its exterior.
The building was constructed in 1910 and sustained damage during World War II, then served as a workers' canteen for half a century. Between 2002 and 2004, a major restoration returned it to its original religious purpose.
The synagogue takes its name from the Galician Jewish community that once gathered here, and today it houses a learning center offering courses on Jewish history, language, and religious texts. Visitors can observe how this space keeps Jewish education and tradition alive in the city.
The synagogue is located on Zhylianska Street in central Kyiv and welcomes visitors on weekdays and religious holidays. Guests should wear modest clothing and follow customary practices when entering.
The building is one of few religious structures in the city to retain much of its original architectural beauty after enduring decades of neglect. Its restoration in 2004 made it a symbol of cultural resilience in Kyiv.
