Hall of Remembrance, War memorial in Kyiv, Ukraine
The Hall of Remembrance is a war memorial in Kyiv, Ukraine, set within the Ministry of Defense compound, featuring engraved wall plaques, a ceremonial bell, and a formal square dedicated to military personnel who died in service. Three books inside the hall record the names of soldiers, service members, and volunteers, alongside the inscriptions on the walls.
The memorial opened on October 14, 2018, on the initiative of President Petro Poroshenko, to honor members of the armed forces who died from 1992 onward. That year marks the formation of Ukraine's independent military, making it the starting point for all names recorded here.
The hall draws people who come to read the names on the walls and stand in the ceremonial square outside, which is used for public remembrance gatherings. The three books of names are kept inside and can be consulted by anyone who visits.
The site sits within the Ministry of Defense compound, so it is worth checking access conditions before visiting, as entry may depend on security arrangements on the day. Visiting around a commemorative date can give a fuller sense of how the place is used.
Every year on August 29, the names of 223 soldiers who died on that same date in different years are read aloud during a special ceremony held at the site. That date is the anniversary of one of the single deadliest days recorded in Ukraine's military conflicts.
