Snovsk, city of Ukraine
Snovsk is a small city in Ukraine located in the Chernihiv region, situated along the Snov River from which it takes its name. The city displays a mix of older brick buildings and newer structures, with a central square, several parks, and basic shops serving everyday needs.
The city was founded in the 1860s as a small settlement and took its name from the railway station built in 1874. In 1935, the name changed to Shchors to honor the Bolshevik military leader Mykola Shchors, until Ukraine reverted to the original name in 2016.
The name Snovsk comes from the nearby Snov River and the railway station that gave the settlement its identity. Walking through the city, you can observe how the community gathers for simple celebrations in the central square and how neighbors spend time together on park benches.
The city is easy to reach by car, with basic roads connecting it to nearby towns and villages. A small railway station still exists but sees little regular use, making a car the most practical way to visit.
During World War II, the city was occupied by German forces, with Jewish residents forced into a ghetto and many killed in nearby forests. These tragic events are remembered today through memorials and local accounts of this difficult chapter in the city's history.
