Horlivka, Industrial center in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine
Horlivka is an industrial city in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. The city spreads across three main districts where residential neighborhoods sit alongside mining facilities and waste heaps.
The settlement was founded in 1779 as Gosudarev Posad and remained a small place until the mid-19th century. Engineer Pyotr Gorlov opened the first coal mine in 1867 and transformed the place into a mining center.
The Municipal Art Museum displays works by regional painters and graphic artists in rotating exhibitions. The Razumov Museum preserves a collection of miniature books from several centuries, which visitors can view in small display cases.
The city connects to surrounding regions through a railway network, with main stations in the Kalinin and Mykytivka districts. Visitors should prepare for a large area where different neighborhoods are separated by considerable distances.
The shafts in the Donets Basin reach exceptional depths and have created huge waste heaps that dot the entire surroundings. These dark hills have been landmarks for residents for generations and continue to shape the cityscape today.
