Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Administrative region in western Ukraine
Khmelnytskyi Oblast is a region in western Ukraine between Podolia and Volhynia that encompasses gentle uplands and wide fields. More than 120 rivers flow through the area and supply the farmland.
The territory was established in 1937 as Kamianets-Podilskyi Oblast with its administrative seat in the city of the same name. In 1954 the capital moved to Khmelnytskyi, and the region took its current name.
The medieval fortresses document the shifting control by different empires and display varying architectural styles today. Visitors can walk through stone walls and towers in places like Kamianets-Podilskyi or Sataniv that once guarded the land.
The region divides into three administrative districts and includes thirteen cities and many villages throughout the countryside. A nuclear power plant supplies energy for local needs and contributes to the electricity grid.
Archaeological finds near the village of Vrublivtsi revealed a Paleolithic camp about 300,000 years old. This discovery provides evidence of the earliest known human settlement in this territory.
