Gelonus, Ancient archaeological complex in Bilsk, Ukraine.
Gelonus is an ancient archaeological complex near the village of Bilsk, featuring defensive structures spread across a large area. The site contains visible fortification remains and numerous burial mounds that hold artifacts from different periods.
The settlement was founded in antiquity and had already been abandoned when the Persian ruler Darius attempted to conquer it during his campaigns. The site shows traces of a long occupation before it was eventually deserted.
The settlement reflects a blend of Greek and Scythian traditions visible in the ruins of wooden temples and local building styles. This cultural mixing appears in the foundations and structures that archaeologists continue to uncover on the site.
The remains are accessible across multiple sections of the site, showing fortifications and burial mounds that can be explored from different vantage points. A walk through the area provides a good sense of the ancient settlement's extent and layout.
The site was already abandoned before Darius reached it, suggesting the inhabitants deliberately left. This early desertion makes Gelonus a puzzling example of sudden settlement abandonment in the ancient world.
