Sokil Kyiv, ice hockey team
Sokil Kyiv is an ice hockey team from Ukraine's capital that plays home games at the ATEK Sport Complex. The arena holds around 500 spectators and displays team banners and symbols, while players wear blue and white jerseys featuring the falcon logo.
The team was founded in 1963 and was originally part of the Dynamo sports group before becoming Sokil in 1973. During the 1980s, Sokil ranked among the best Soviet teams, finishing third in the league in 1984-85 and becoming the first Ukrainian team at the Spengler Cup in 1986 where it placed second.
The name Sokil means falcon in Ukrainian, symbolizing the spirit of rising and flying high. Fans and players live this tradition at every game, gathering as a community to support their team.
Visitors can watch the team in the intimate arena where the action is visible up close. After games, some players stay to chat with fans and sign autographs, making the experience personal and welcoming.
Several Sokil players, including Ruslan Fedotenko and Anton Babchuk, reached the NHL and competed for the Stanley Cup, showing how the team developed talent. A youth hockey school carrying the same name works to keep the ice hockey tradition alive in the city.
