Besarabsky Market

Besarabsky Market is a covered marketplace with stone walls, large arched windows, and ornamental architectural details throughout its facade. Inside, a central hall spans multiple levels with vendor stalls and display counters where goods are arranged in open view.

Industrialist Lazar Brodsky funded construction of this market in 1912, turning an undeveloped area into a functioning commercial space. The building reflects Art Nouveau design principles that were popular during the early 1900s across Europe.

The market serves as a gathering place where residents shop for fresh produce, dairy, meat, and regional dishes that reflect everyday Ukrainian food habits. Vendors here connect local producers directly with the people who cook and eat these ingredients daily.

The market is located where Khreshchatyk Street meets Bessarabska Square in the city center and opens early morning through evening each day. Multiple entrances and a spacious layout make it easy to walk through, with clear sight lines between different sections of stalls.

The building houses one of the earliest refrigeration systems in the Russian Empire, installed in its basement during initial construction. This early 1900s innovation allowed perishable goods to be stored and sold in better condition than competitors across the region.
