Golovan House, Stone residence in Old Town, Lutsk, Ukraine
Golovan House is a private stone residence in the Old Town of Lutsk, its exterior walls covered with hundreds of figures carved from green sandstone. The property also includes an inner courtyard where the carved works continue on every surface.
After a fire destroyed his home in the 1970s, Mykola Golovan acquired land near the Styr River and started building a new residence from scratch. Over the following decades, he gradually transformed it through his own sculptural work into what visitors see today.
The entrance displays a large stone relief showing family members, reflecting local traditions in stone carving craft. Such handcrafted details shape the character of the entire property and tell of regional artistic skill.
The house sits behind the Lutheran Church on Lutheranska Street, and seeing the interior and courtyard requires arranging a visit in advance. The exterior sculptures are visible from the street without any prior arrangement.
The grounds hold many unfinished stone sculptures that have not yet been placed in their final position, giving a direct look at the creative process still in motion. Near the entrance, a large relief carved in stone shows members of the Golovan family, making the connection between the builder and his work immediately personal.
